Balancing Scares

Stephen posed an interesting question on his blog today at www.starland.com. What makes a haunt too scary for some people and not scary enough for others? We are always being asked if the haunted house is scary. My standard reply is "It really depends on what scares you." Some folks are afraid of the dark, while others are afraid of spiders and still others nearly pass out because they heard a chainsaw.

So let's say a haunt has some really great spider scares. Someone who is afraid of spiders will then be more afraid than someone who isn't. For the person afraid of spiders this haunt would be terrifying while his friend would just walk out and say it was "lame". It's a hard balancing act. We ask ourselves each season - "What will give the best scares for the majority of people attending?" Sometimes we get it right first time out. Other times it takes some tweaking to find 'just the right scare'. While other times we discover a scare where we didn't even think one would be.

If people come to any haunted house to have fun and get scared - then they probably will. If they come to "prove" that nothing will scare them - then they won't have fun or be scared. So finding scares for everyone can be challenging. Like I said before - it's a balancing act.
